Geoff Dyer: Portraits

Tasmanian Musuem and Art Gallery

26 July - 06 October 2019

Henry Hunter Gallery 6

This digital exhibition accompaniment features audio experts from a conversation between Tasmanian artist Geoff Dyer and Director of Despard Gallery, Steven Joyce, talking about select portraits exhibited at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery in 2019.  Through the words of the artist, Geoff provides a raw and honest insight into the thinking behind each painting. This includes his 2003 Archibald Prize winning portrait of Tasmanian author Richard Flanagan.

Most renowned for his powerful and gestural painted landscapes, Dyer has also built a national reputation through portraiture, frequently exhibited as part of the Archibald Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.  Dyer is only the second Tasmanian to be awarded the Archibald Prize during its 98 year history.

The selected portraits exhibited by the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery include notable Tasmanians including Alec Campbell (Gallipoli survivor), Bob Brown (activist and politician), Richard Flanagan (author), and David Walsh (founder of Mona).  This exhibition marks the first time Dyer’s portraits have been publicly displayed in Tasmania, and the only time they have been exhibited as a group.

Geoff Dyer is represented by Despard Gallery.
